2007: The Year of Rights
In Sawy Culture Wheel

So barbarian is the age we have stepped into, that we are about to lose – if we have not already lost – our safety valve, that is “Rights”. The profit we are chasing is about to become our own predator unless we pay most attention to the rights of men as well as the rights of men’s land.

For this reason we have found out that it is of most importance that we dedicate this year to the issue of Rights in its widest possible meaning. For the sake of applicability, we have tried to divide rights into 12 major categories:

1. January...................Children’s Rights:
We shall deal with all rights pertaining to children, starting with your child’s right to have a good name. Children have the right to get proper education, nourishment, shelter, upbringing within the frame of a peaceful society. Children also have the right to play, have fun, and get pampered by all family members.

2. February...................Teens’ Rights:
We shall deal with the rights of effective education, expression, knowledge, recognition as a person with dignity, the right to ask questions even when they are sometimes embarrassing for grownups or adults. Besides, teens have the right to choose friends, to be given the proper supervision of the parents, to decide on their fields of study. In addition, they have the right to get involved in whatever touches their lives, including decision making.

3. March...................Women’s & Men’s Rights:
We shall deal with both women’s & men’s rights, which can possibly be combined together, especially in this era that we live in. Women’s rights are very much dependent on men and vice versa. Women’s rights should cover expressing one’s self, getting an equal opportunity at work, with equal salaries as men if the same job is to be done. Socially speaking, they have the right to be respected as wives, family members, as well as equivalent citizens. As regards men’s rights, this shall include the right to be a respectable citizen, employee, husband, household leader, and even national leader.

4. April...................The Right to Know:
We shall deal with the right of every person to get credible information regardless of educational or social class. This shall extend to all sources of media, whether public or private, including the internet.

5. May...................Environmental Rights:
We shall deal with environmental rights. When we say environment we mean the present and future actions that might effect the environment, including roads. This covers the ability to use public areas & streets, without any fear of being assaulted or violated. Environmental rights should be taken very seriously and should be passed down to younger generations.

6. June...................Animal Rights:
We shall deal with the importance of refining the human behavior towards animals. The goal here is to make humans more human by shedding light on animal rights. If a human cares for the well being of animals then he’ll care for humans as well.

7. July...................Youth’s Rights:
We shall deal with the rights of young people, which is a very important issue in Egypt as 50% of Egyptians are classified as youth. Youths should have the right to express themselves without any borders except respecting others. They should be involved in every decision that affects their environment, future, and their lives in general. They should have the right to training, not just fundamental but practical work as well. They should also have the right to practice their political rights.

8. August...................The Right to Express:
We shall deal with the rights like freedom of speech, freedom of criticism, freedom of press and freedom of media. Measures should be set to differentiate between criticism and assaults.

9.September...................Educational Rights:
We shall deal with the right to pursue all level of education, whether free or paid. It is not only the responsibility of the government, but of the society as a whole. Everybody should preserve education because there is so much to accomplish in order to change the big picture for the better.

10. October...................Commercial Rights:
We shall deal with commercial rights, which are sometimes not applied in many work places. Many commercial relations are not written, or registered. This could cause many problems within the society that could be simply avoided by teaching people how to write contracts, the importance of writing anything agreed upon between any two persons, entities, companies or organizations.

11. November...................Copyrights:
We shall deal with the type of rights which has risen in the last decade that is copyrights. Everyone is speaking of copyrights but the implementation is very poor. Many people copy software or ideas and confiscate the right of the proper owners.

12.December...................Political Rights:
We shall deal with the people’s right to vote and to choose their rulers.
