Abdel Moneim El Sawy

Born on February 20, 1918 in Beheira Province, Egypt
Graduated with a B.A. from Cairo University, Department of Arabic
   Language and Literature
Worked in journalism and was twice elected President of the
   Egyptian Journalists Syndicate

 

Formed Egypt News Agency, the first Arabic news agency to be formed
Formed the First African Journalists Association, of which he became Chairman until his
   departure
Held the post of Chairman of UNESCO Publications Center
Enriched the Arabic Library with a number of fiction and intellectual subjects. His most known
   is the five volume novel El Sakia (The Waterwheel); The Victim; Departure; Destiny;
   Repentance; and lastly Reckoning, which he did not finish
Elected member of the People’s Assembly for El Zaher and Ezbekieh Constituency, and Deputy
   Speaker of the Assembly
Became Minister of Culture and Information in the cabinet of Mamdouh Salem, during the
   presidency of Anwar Sadat
Appointed member of the Shura Council in its first period
Elected President of the Association of Long Distance Swimming and greatly contributed to the
   support of all fields of sports
Was a great defender of Arab causes.
December 7th, 1984 Abdel-Moneim El Sawy died in Baghdad as he was giving his last oration
